Bilingual Method
This is comparatively a recent method invented by Prof. C.J. Dodson (1967) of wales .
"This Method is a unique method which carries the merits of translation-cum-grammar method and Direct method and structural approach."
This method believes that while learning the mother tongue, the child has already established the concept of so many objects and things in his mind. It is there fore unless repeating these concept again while teaching a foreign language. if he knows the concept of a word in his mother tongue, we should give him the mother tongue equallent of a word of foreign language.
The word bilingual is generally used to refer to the knowledge of two languages by the same indivisual. This method teaches us a foreign language with the help child's native language.
The main characteristics of Bilingual Method
1. Sentence is the unit of teaching.
2. The Subject matter is selected and graded.
3. Rigorous practice is done in sentence patterns.
4. Mother tongue is only used during early stages
5. Word for word translation is not done in Bilingual Method.
6. Mother tongue is used to explain the meanings of new words, phrases, idioms, sentences and grammatical points and rules.
7. Is emphasises on creating situations not exactly like direct. In this, situations are created just by giving the mother tongue equivalents of English words.
8.Translations are only done by the teacher not by the students to explain the matter. After explaination, practice is done without the help of the mother tongue.
